Estelle Shirecore Barker House Concert
A program of piano repertoire which travels through various time periods and styles. From the baroque era, with music from J.S. Bach, provoking thought about the meaning of human existence by virtue of its all embracing earthiness and divinity, through to more modern works, such as those by Prokofiev. His Seventh Sonata was written during the 1940’s, a period of great struggle for Russia, and through this sonata Prokofiev displays the harsh and relentless nature of war, while also exploring the very human side of the conflict and the emotions of those in such a difficult time. This sonata embodies not only the tragedy, loss and violence of this period in Russian history, but also the incredible sensitivity, love, creation and life still present within the people. Also featured in the program will be romantic works such as Chopin’s G Minor Ballade- performed in concert halls around the world and renowned for its dramatic narrative and overwhelming lyricism, this work tells a tale which displays not only anguish and grief, but also includes moments of the most giving nature, a tenderness which links closely to the theme of birth. The program will also feature other shorter works which further enable the exploration of birth and existence within the realm of solo piano music.
