Mickey Smith is best known for creative work with sonics and visuals. His early years revolved around music and the surrounding Atlantic coast of West Cornwall. From a young age Mickey played with blues circuit bands, touring from Cornwall to London until he left school. Working clubs, legions, pubs and dive bars as a young musician meant he could save enough cash to hit the road at 16.

From there, many years of nomadic living unfolded, riding waves, playing music & exploring far flung corners of the world. Experimentation with cameras developed a natural instinct for documenting adventure at sea by day, and music by night. His cinematic approach carved a reputation for dramatic camera work as a specialist swimming heavy seas and remote environments. For a decade he helped pioneer some of Irelands revered big wave locations and has worked in this regard with some of the finest wave riders and oceanic adventurers in the world.

In 2010 his short film ‘Darkside of the Lens‘ was released and garnered international acclaim, winning multiple awards.

Dark Side of The Lens (2010) will screen as part of Water at The Mech on Saturday 1st July, 2017.
